Both young people and adults gain immense social and physical benefit from sporting activities. Students who want to participate in sports at their school or through a local program are typically required to complete a Preparticipation Physical Exam. We are happy to provide this type of physical for students in the Milwaukie, Oregon area.

What is the purpose of the sports physical?

Sports physicals are intended to assess a student’s current health status. Most schools and programs require a preparticipation physical for each new school year and, often, for each individual sport. The purpose of this examination is to ensure a student can safely participate in the prospective activity.

Aspects of the Preparticipation Physical Examination

Students needing a sports physical are usually given a specific form from their school or program. During the physical performed at Eastside Spine & Injury in Milwaukie, we complete the various questions on this form. Your healthcare provider may request information that pertains to your medical history, such as:

  • Serious illnesses experienced by close family members
  • Whether you have had or currently have asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or other conditions
  • If you have had surgery or ever been hospitalized for medical treatment
  • Any allergies you may have
  • Any injuries you have sustained, such as a concussion or broken bones
  • Medications or supplements you currently take
  • Whether you use alcohol, drugs, or tobacco
  • If you have ever experienced dizziness, chest pain, or trouble breathing while exercising

Many of the health history questions on your school’s physical form may be answered at home before your visit. Our team will complete the exam portion of the form. Full disclosure is very important when completing the health history. The chance of an existing health condition affecting eligibility for participation is very low.

Preparticipation Physical Examination visits are typically very quick. During the visit, we will measure height, weight, and blood pressure. A general analysis of the lungs, heart, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat will also be conducted. Lastly, your physician will assess your posture, strength, flexibility, and joints.

Most students have no issues with their PPE and we are able to confirm optimal health for participation in sports. If a potential health concern is identified during the physical exam, further testing and follow-up care will be discussed and arranged as needed.
