Physical Therapy – From Eastside Spine and Injury

Losing your mobility due to injury or illness can be extremely frustrating. It can also be painful, making it even more difficult to live your day-to-day life. Fortunately, physical therapy can often do a great deal to help you improve your mobility and reduce your pain. At Eastside Spine and Injury, our physical therapy team can examine your limitations and/or injuries, prescribe an effective physical therapy program, and guide you through that program to get you real, tangible results.

Starting Physical Therapy

Dr. Brian Sims and our team here at Eastside Spine and Injury are here to help you heal – a process that begins with a thorough, full body exam by Dr. Sims. The doctor will determine the nature of your injuries or limitations, and will base your physical therapy on what he finds during your exam. Some of the things he may look at include:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Range of Motion
  • Neurological Function
  • Pain

Physical Therapy Treatments

There are a number of different options for physical therapy treatments, depending on the nature of your injury or mobility restriction. Dr. Sims may use one or more of the following:

Physical Agents

Various physical agents, such as ultrasound, ice, heat or electrical stimulation may be used to reduce inflammation, ease pain and encourage healing.

Manual Adjustments

There are several different techniques for physically adjusting problem areas in your spine and joints. While chiropractic adjustments to the spine are the most well-known, there are a number of techniques that are appropriate for joints and extremities as well. Dr. Sims will choose which is ideal for your situation and apply gentle, specific pressure to encourage proper joint function, increase range of motion and lessen pain.

Rehab Exercises

There are numerous tools and techniques for improving your range of motion, reducing pain and encouraging healing – but sometimes the most important part is increasing your physical strength to support the areas that are giving you problems. Dr. Sims will give you exercises specific to your issue so that you can get stronger, heal faster and reduce the potential for similar injuries in the future.

Tools Used in Physical Therapy

Several different tools may be used in your physical therapy sessions, including:

Ultrasound

Ultrasound applies sound waves to the site of your injury to help treat problems like tendonitis and sprains.

Traction

Traction is the process of decompressing your spine using a table that gently stretches your back and/or neck. The space created by traction can reduce pain, increase circulation and encourage healing.

Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy uses a cold laser to apply light energy to injured tissues. The light therapy can help to speed up the cellular healing process, lower inflammation and reduce pain.
